A brand that I have chosen to research for brand positioning is Impala Rollerskates. They have carved out a distinctive niche, capturing the essence of vintage skating culture while embracing inclusivity and fun. The brand’s mission and vision center around fostering a positive community for skaters of all levels, with a strong emphasis on nostalgia and recreational enjoyment. This is shown in their website, social media, and other forms of marketing. Today, I will discuss brand positioning, why it’s important, and how Impala Rollerskates does it well!
Impala Rollerskate’s Branding
Impala’s brand identity is effectively communicated through its name, logo, and slogan, which encapsulate the spirit of retro roller skating. The brand name itself refers to impalas, which are graceful antelopes. This imagery aligns well with the brand’s focus on recreational skating and the joy of fluid movement. Of course, Rollerskates is in the name, however, they sell skates, blades, safety gear, and other accessories. Their logo is a fun, simple style with stars. It is often seen next to pastel imagery which aligns with their mission of making rollerskating fun for everyone!
Impala aims to produce vintage-inspired rollerskates and a fun community to go along with it. In my opinion and personal experience, they have done this well! Their social media is filled with action shots of skaters of all ages enjoying the sport. They have also created an open dialogue with their blog posts such as their International Women’s Day post on Concrete Queenz: “Concrete Queenz currently empowers and supports 50 girls, divided equally between Animo Mae Jemison Charter Middle School (AMJ) in Compton and Animo Legacy Charter Middle School in South LA,” (Impala’s community connections ✨ meet Concrete Queenz, 2024).
Choosing An Effective Brand Name
Following in Impala’s footsteps with their top-tier brand positioning, I would recommend a few steps to ensure that the brand name you’re choosing is appropriate for your company and target audience.
To begin the naming process, it is crucial to create a naming brief that outlines the company’s strategy, target audience, and competitive landscape. This brief acts as a guide, helping to select a name that effectively communicates the brand’s essence and sets it apart from its competitors. By taking into consideration factors such as meaning, adaptability, and distinctiveness, you can ensure that the chosen name aligns with your brand’s identity and resonates with your target audience (Meyerson, 2022). Impala has accomplished this and remains successful in doing so with new product releases. I would also recommend tapping into you and your team’s creativity as these names are more likely to be remembered! According to the Harvard Business Review:
“The most effective names are often unexpected, catchy, or buzzworthy — characteristics that creativity can help deliver,” (Meyerson, 2022).
Mission, Vision, and Audience
Understanding your brand’s mission, vision, and target audience are all factors that intertwine when creating the company, products, and ultimately the name! By aligning these foundational elements, you can effectively communicate your brand’s values and resonate with your intended audience.
Impala Rollerskates is a great example of effective brand positioning. The brand has captured the essence of vintage skating culture and has fostered inclusivity and community. With its strategic branding efforts, Impala has successfully carved out a distinctive niche in the market. The brand’s evocative name, vibrant logo, and engaging social media presence are some of the key factors that have contributed to its success.
